How Are Paintballs Made?

Paintball is a kind of sport in which competing players eliminate their opponents by targeting and hitting them using capsules containing paint called ‘paintball’ fired from a gun which is specially designed for this sport, it is called ‘paintball marker’. This game can be played outdoor as well as indoor and the field sizes can vary. The field for the game is designed with artificial terrains and the player can use is for playing strategically. This sporting game has been an attraction of over 10 million people in the USA alone. Paintball is based on statistics and has been known as a safe game to play, it is also said to be safer than tennis.

Paintball contains polyethylene glycol, dye formulas and other non-toxic water-soluble substances. When the paintball strikes the opponent, it makes a mark showing that he is out of the game leaving the others to continue the game. The team who eliminates opponents of the other team is the winner.

How to Make a Paintball?
The paintball should contain a paint which is biodegradable, water-soluble and can easily be rinsed out of clothing or human skin by plain water. The player who is hit by a paintball is marked with a stain of a splat that can be easily washed with soap and water which will make him ready for the next game.

Paintballs are also called softgels which are made on softgel encapsulating machines. These machines are very expensive but can efficiently make paintballs a considerable low rate. It will be really very interesting to know how an encapsulation machine works for making paintballs. Here is a step by step procedure;

Step 1:
First, the gelatin is melted and then the hot gelatin is molded to form two thin gelatin ribbons which are each made to pass over a rotating die casting.

Step 2:
Usually, the body of the die casts is made of aluminum alloy forming paintball capsules of standard size and shape. The shape of the softgels is spherical or it can also be shaped unusually. The die casts press against each other

Softgels can be spherical in shape or can also be unusually shaped. The die casts press against each other as they rotate making softgels.

Step 3:
Paint is filled in the opposite sides of the die and when they meet, the paint gets injected into the area between the sheets.

Step 4:
The die stays in a rotated position with both of the sides pressing against one another forming a filled pellet. The seam on the capsules determines where the two sheets meet.

Step 5:
Then, the gelatin will be sealed and taken removed from the rotating die. The paintball is dropped from the paintball and comes in a rubbery form and it is sufficiently large to be used for the game.

Step 6:
The capsules look like bouncy and they have to be arranged in trays for allowing them to dry which also shrinks the gelatin while drying.

The technicians operating the manufacturing of paintballs frequently monitor the encapsulation machines and the quality of the paintballs is also checked to see if they will pass the required standard and specifications of every production. When the paintballs are ready, a final check is done and then the paintballs are ready for use.
