Why Paintball Players Use Pod Packs by Jeremy Smith
Any paintball player that is the least bit serious about the sport knows that wearing paintball pod packs are essential in a game. The explanation for using them is simple; for any game longer than a few minutes, extra Paintballs will be needed in order to continue the game. Any player caught without any paintballs becomes an easy target to an opposing player. However, since most paintball marker hoppers hold around 200 paintballs, extra pods allow for extra ammo when needed. The concept is similar to carrying extra magazines for a firearm. Pod packs are what allow for multiple pods to be carried at once. When thinking about investments for playing paintball, a pod pack should come right after investing in a paintball marker, a good Paintball Mask and an air source.
Though one could use a larger hopper to make up for having few, if any, extra pods, this is not common practice. A larger hopper not only makes a larger target, but can be also very unwieldy in a firefight due to increased weight and size. Plus, most Paintball Pods are light enough so that multiple ones can be carried simultaneously without any significant hindrance in performance. However, pods are bulky due to the nature of their size and cannot be feasibly carried in a pants pocket, making pod packs important for this job.
Most paintball pod packs come in two forms, a simple waist-strapped pack and a harness pack. The simple waist-strapped packs are the most common and are commonly used by speedball players. These types wrap around the waist, with pods being placed in the back. These packs are easy to use and wear, and are fairly low profile. Harness packs typically wrap around the waist and around the shoulders, often like a vest. They allow for pods to be placed either at the front or back. In addition, they come with more options for storage, such as grenade holders, ID sleeves, remote line tank pouches, and pockets that can be used to store radios. The advantage of these is flexibility, but they have a disadvantage of having a larger profile and may also be uncomfortable and cumbersome for some players. Harness-style pod packs are more common with woodsball players. A less seen type is based on the Modular Lightweight Load-Carrying Equipment (MOLLE) system, which offers a customizable way of designing a harness-style pod pack. However, this option is more expensive than the other two types.
